Frequently asked questions
How do I learn to play?
Tap How to Play on the home screen for fourteen short lessons, each ending with a quick question. While you play, the table options can suggest a meld, and Settings has beginner hints and highlights for legal moves.
Which rules does the app use?
American Burraco, played as follows:
- Two decks with four Jokers (108 cards). Four players in two teams; partners sit opposite each other.
- Each player receives 11 cards, and each team has a Pot of 11 more cards waiting on the table.
- On your turn, draw one card from the stock or take the whole discard pile. You may take the pile only if you immediately use at least one of its cards in a meld.
- Melds are runs of at least three cards of the same suit, or sets of Aces or 3s. Jokers and twos are wild; a meld may contain at most one wild card.
- A meld of seven or more cards is a Burraco: clean with no wild card (+200), semi-clean with a wild card and seven natural cards in a row (+150), or dirty (+100).
- The first player in a team to run out of cards takes the team's Pot. If they ran out by melding, they keep playing; if they ran out by discarding, they use the Pot from their next turn.
- To close the round, your team must have taken its Pot and made at least one clean Burraco. Your last card may not be a discarded Joker or two. Closing earns +100.
- Cards are worth: Joker 30, two 20, ace 15, 8 to King 10, 3 to 7 5. Melded cards count for you, cards left in your hand count against you, and an untaken Pot costs 100.
- A match ends after a round in which a team reaches 2,000 points; the higher score wins, and tied matches continue.
Does the app need an internet connection?
No. Everything works offline.
Is my game saved?
Yes, automatically after every move and whenever you leave the app. Tap Continue Game on the home screen to pick up where you left off. Pass and Play and the daily challenge have their own saved games.
How does the daily challenge work?
Every day, everyone gets the same deal: one round against Medium computer players, and you play first. Your score is your team's points for that round, and only your first finished attempt of the day counts. A new deal starts at midnight UTC (1:00 in Italy in winter, 2:00 in summer). Your streak, best score and recent results are on the Daily Challenge page.
Can I play with friends?
Yes, on one device: tap Multiplayer → Pass and Play to share an iPhone or iPad with 2 to 4 people. The computer plays any empty seats, and each person's cards stay hidden until they take the device. Online play with friends on other devices is not available yet.
Can I play in Italian?
Yes. The app is in English and Italian and follows your device language. To change the language for this app only, open the Settings app on your device. If only one language is listed under General → Language & Region, add the other one there first. Then go to Apps → American Burraco → Language and choose it.
Where are my statistics and achievements? Can I move them to a new device?
They are saved only on your device and include single-player games only. They move to a new device if you set it up from a backup of your old one (iCloud or computer backup). Deleting the app deletes them.
Which devices are supported?
iPhone and iPad with iOS or iPadOS 17 or later. The game is played in landscape.
Accessibility
The app supports VoiceOver, larger text sizes and Reduce Motion. Music, sound effects, haptics and animation speed can be adjusted in Settings.
